College of Health Sciences and College of Basic and Applied Sciences Hold Joint Congregation Ceremony

The College of Health Sciences (CHS) and the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS) have jointly held congregation ceremony for students who completed their programme of study at the end of the 2017/18 academic year.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu reported that out of the number of students admitted to pursue various programmes in the University, 11,216 students have registered for their programmes on all campuses of the University. This number according to the Vice-Chancellor is made up of 5,828 male students and 5,388 female students. These numbers include 306 international/visiting students of various nationalities across the world. The total number also reflects the overall admission ratio of 51:49 for males and females, suggesting a quantum leap from the ratio for male and female students of 60:40 some few years back. He indicated that it was worthy of note, judging from the admission figures, that the University was on the verge of attaining the strategic objective of a 50:50 ratio in male and female enrollment.

Professor Owusu advised the graduands to be good ambassadors of the University. As ambassadors of the University, he asked them to be guided by, and exhibit the core values of the University: Loyalty, Respect, Integrity and Commitment. Besides these values, he urged the graduands, and by extension, the youth of this nation, to also aspire to be disciplined, honest and modest in all their endeavours. He encouraged them to seek excellence, believe in themselves, work hard, plan ahead, and be ethical in all their dealings as these virtues will lead them on the path to success.

The Guest Speaker, Ms. Alice Asafu-Adjaye advised the students to live beneath their means, stop blaming other people, admit it when they make a mistake, listen more; talk less, be on time, stop making excuses, be kind to unkind people, be humble, learn from their past and above all plan for their future.

Ms. Afia Brefo-Sekyere, valedictorian for the ceremony recounted the good and the bad times they have had while they were students of the University. She advised her colleagues to work hard to create the opportunities they so much desire to have for themselves. She stated, “If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door, build so many doors”.

The joint congregation ceremony of the CHS and CBAS saw seven hundred and twenty two (722) graduands being awarded various degrees. The ceremony was one of the several congregation ceremonies the University organised for students who completed their programmes of study in the 2017/2018 academic year. The ceremony was presided over by the Chancellor of the University; Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse.
