College of Health Sciences hosts Maiden Provost Fitness Friday

The College of Health Sciences (CHS), University of Ghana, successfully organized its maiden Provost Fitness Friday on 31st January, 2025. The event, held at the Forecourt of the Charles Easmon Building, Korle Bu Campus, brought together faculty, staff, and members of the CHS community for an afternoon of fitness, fun, and wellness.

In Prof. Alfred Edwin Yawson, Provost of the College of Health Sciences opening remarks, he indicated the importance of incorporating physical activity into daily routines, especially within the academic environment where sedentary work is common. He highlighted that initiatives like Provost Fitness Friday are designed not only to promote physical health but also to enhance mental well-being, team bonding, and stress reduction among faculty and staff.

The program commenced at 3:00p.m. with an energetic 30-minute aerobic session led by a professional fitness instructor from the University of Ghana Sports Directorate. The session set the tone for the day, with participants engaging in various stretching and cardio exercises designed to promote physical well-being. The lively atmosphere, accompanied by upbeat music, encouraged even the most reluctant participants to join in, creating a strong sense of community and enthusiasm.

Following the aerobic session, participants had the opportunity to unwind and engage in a variety of interactive games, fostering camaraderie and friendly competition among colleagues. The lineup of games included: Connect 4, Oware, Ludo, Lime and Spoon Race, Corn Hole, Draught, Jenga and Card games.

These activities catered to different interests, ensuring that everyone could participate and have fun. The lime and spoon race, in particular, drew laughter and excitement, as faculty and staff showcased their balance and coordination skills in a lighthearted competition.

As part of the College’s commitment to promoting holistic health, a free medical screening exercise was conducted alongside the fitness activities. Participants had access to basic health checks, including blood pressure monitoring, body mass index (BMI) assessments, and glucose level tests. The screening provided valuable health insights and encouraged staff to prioritize their well-being.

The just-ended Provost Fitness Friday was a resounding success, with participants expressing appreciation for the opportunity to relax, connect, and focus on their health outside of the usual academic and administrative settings. As part of its wellness agenda, the College of Health Sciences plans to make this event a regular feature, encouraging greater participation from faculty and staff. The College remains committed to creating a healthy, active, and vibrant community, where the well-being of its members is a top priority.

Stay active. Stay healthy. See you at the next Provost Fitness Friday!
