Provost Welcomes New College Registrar and College Finance Officer to the College of Health Sciences

The Provost of the College of Health Sciences (CHS), Prof. Alfred Edwin Yawson, formally welcomed Mr. Worlanyo Newton Torvinyo, the newly appointed College Registrar (CR), and Mr. Bright Obeng-Yeboah, the Acting College Finance Officer (CFO), to the College.

During an introductory meeting, Prof. Yawson warmly received the new officers, emphasizing the collaborative and transparent work culture at the College. He assured them of a supportive environment where issues will be discussed and resolved collectively. He encouraged them to be approachable, consult widely, and engage with colleagues in their roles.

The Provost highlighted some key priorities of the College, including engaging Former College Leadership where he advised the new officers to meet all past College leadership to gain insight into the College’s history, challenges, and successes. Prof. Yawson stressed the need to elevate the College’s image and visibility through strategic initiatives with the upcoming CHS 25th Anniversary in 2025. He highlighted some College’s financial constraints, stating that efforts were underway to ensure financial stability. Addressing the financial matters, Mr. Bright Obeng-Yeboah, the Acting CFO, acknowledged the evolving financial landscape and stated that CHS would commence the disbursement of funds to the main University. Prof. Yawson highlighted the need to engage the Vice-Chancellor regarding the release of funds for the Dental School outstanding project  and urged the CFO to follow up on the Ukraine Fund from UGMS through Mr. Benjamin Addo.

Prof. Yawson reiterated that CHS is unique within the University, often facing operational challenges, such as high electricity bills. However, through the efforts of faculty members and Mr. Samuel Mahama, arrangements had been made to offset the College’s outstanding bills. He emphasized the College’s commitment to financial independence through resource mobilization and self-sustaining initiatives. Mr. Obeng-Yeboah also noted that while electricity arrears were being cleared, his office noted that the last financial report was September 2024, and as such requested for current financial statements for review and onward payment. He expressed his commitment to working closely with his colleagues, past officers, and external auditors to streamline financial processes and ensure efficiency.

Discussions also covered student accommodation challenges, particularly hostel fees. It was noted that current residential fees were insufficient to sustain hostel operations. To address this, students had proposed a monthly utility fee of GHS 80 to help offset the outstanding bills to reduce the frequency of power interruptions and disconnection from the ECG. Additionally, the Pro-Vice Chancellor recommended that students contribute financially towards clinicals and transportation to support the School Lance service. The Provost mentioned that a committee had been set up to review tuition fees, and its findings would be reassessed to ensure realistic financial policies for the College.

The Provost encouraged CR and CFO to effectively manage staff and consult frequently, as staff transfers at CHS differ from other units due to accommodation and family-related concerns. He explained that Korle Bu staff transfers were often rotated and carefully handled between schools on Korle Bu campus to balance work responsibilities and personal stability.

Prof. Yawson encouraged the new College Registrar and Finance Officer to bring fresh ideas, innovative solutions, and a positive spirit to their roles. He assured them of the College’s support and urged them to work closely with School Accountants and administrators to enhance financial and administrative efficiency.

Mr. Worlanyo Newton Torvinyo expressed his excitement about joining CHS, having previously worked at Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research he was already familiar with some aspects of the College. He assured the Provost that he would align his vision with that of College and work collaboratively with his colleagues to support the University’s broader goals.

The College of Health Sciences looks forward to a productive tenure under the leadership of Mr. Worlanyo Newton Torvinyo and Mr. Bright Obeng-Yeboah, as they contribute to the growth and development of CHS and the University of Ghana.
