College Of Health Sciences Partners With Midland State University, Zimbabwe

The College of Health Sciences (CHS), University of Ghana, hosted a high-level delegation from Midlands State University on 10th April 2026 as part of efforts to strengthen international academic collaboration. Welcoming the team, the Provost, Prof. Alfred E. Yawson, provided an overview of the University’s collegiate structure, highlighting its British-style system of education, leadership framework, and the four colleges. He elaborated on the mandate and strengths of CHS, noting its comprehensive training across key health disciplines including Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Midwifery, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences. He further emphasized the strategic positioning of CHS across the Legon and Korle-Bu campuses, with the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital serving as a major hub for clinical training and research in West Africa.

The engagement, led by the Vice-Chancellor of Midlands State University, Prof. Muzvidziwa, focused on deepening collaboration in teaching, research, mentorship, and institutional capacity building following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions. The delegation expressed keen interest in student and faculty exchange programmes, joint research and grant applications, external examination systems, and the development of health professional education. They also sought to learn from CHS’s experience in curriculum development, particularly the Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP), as well as strategies for strengthening emerging medical schools. Discussions further explored opportunities for collaboration in clinical training, biomedical sciences, and specialized fields such as maxillofacial studies, alongside capacity building for faculty through postgraduate training.

Both institutions underscored the importance of bilateral engagement in advancing healthcare education and research across Africa. The CHS leadership reaffirmed its readiness to support Midlands State University through curriculum sharing, faculty exchange, and mentorship initiatives, while also encouraging collaborative efforts in multidisciplinary research and professional development. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to translate the Memorandum of Understanding into actionable programmes, including exchange visits, joint academic initiatives, and institutional linkages at both faculty and departmental levels. The visit ended with a guided tour of CHS facilities, exchange of gifts, and a renewed vision for a mutually beneficial partnership.
