These trainees will ultimately develop independent, high quality research to address yet unanswered and emerging questions that could transform TB prevention and care programmes for people living with HIV in Ghana.

Categories of Training Modules

  • Long-term Training

Long-term Trainees will participate in well-established training programmes at UG, Brown or South Africa. University of Ghana PhDs and Master’s degree training will undertake a complete thesis project or gain technical skills degree in an important area that is currently unavailable in Ghana. The training will be customized to trainee’s needs and ultimate career goals. For example, trainees will be able to obtain a Masters in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Clinical or Translational Research, Behavioural Interventions, Global or Public Health at Brown University. Trainees will be expected to develop their own independent projects with their mentors to be submitted for independent review with the TAG for up to $10,000 (PhD) or $7,000 (Masters) for a one time in-country research project during the degree training.

Post-doctoral trainees will work in specific laboratories or established programs to obtain requisite skills in a variety of disciplines including public health, immunology, molecular biology, pharmacology, or other related basic science disciplines, or clinical research trainees will be work closely with active, NIH-supported clinical research projects that are ongoing at Brown or in Ghana or South Africa.

  • Medium Term Training:

Trainees who need training in a specific area, but are not able to travel to the US for a full year, can travel to the US or South Africa for six months for specific research training. The medium-term trainees will follow a similar training model as the long-term clinical research training plan. The medium term trainees will take courses for only one semester and receive clinical research training in one of the specific research areas from their US or South African mentor for six months.

  • In-Country Short-term Training:

Faculty from Brown, UG and South Africa will conduct in-country trainings and workshops in Ghana, when a specific research need has been identified, to train a large number of faculty and staff. Examples include workshop on research methods, ethics, manuscript writing, grant writing or TB/HIV research priorities in Ghana. These workshops will have capacity to train 20 to 40 scientist and researchers depending on the topic.
