Professor Alfred E. Yawson has over twenty years of medical practice and research experience. He is an alumnus of the University of Ghana Medical School, the London School of Economics and Political Science and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where he is an Honorary Associate Professor. He is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (Community Health), and a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians (Public Health). He is the Chairman of the Ghana Non-communicable Diseases, Injury (NCDI) Poverty Commission, a past Vice- President of the West African College of Physicians and past Chairman of the Ghana Chapter of the West African College of Physicians.

            Prof. Yawson is a physician, public health practitioner, academic and researcher, and combines these skills to support, develop and strengthen national and international health systems. He has worked as national and international consultant for many international organizations including the World Bank, Global Financing Facility, WHO, UNICEF, GIZ, JICA and the Center for Integration Science (CIS) in Global Health Equity, University of Harvard, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, USA. He has contributed to the development of several national policy and strategy documents, and led the development of the Ghana Health Service Medium-Term Strategic Plan in 2014, (using the Bottleneck Analysis Health Planning and Budgeting Tool),  developed the National Malaria Strategic Plan 2021-2025, National Healthcare Quality Strategy 2024-2030, the Mass Vaccination Plan for Vaccine-Preventable Disease Outbreaks in Ghana, 2023, among many others. 

           He led the development of Ghana’s Full Portfolio Plan Application for Gavi Programme Support Rational (PSR) which secured over US$17 million for the Expanded Programme on Immunisation, Ghana Health Service, for the period 2020-2024. He has served on several national technical working groups and technical advisory groups for the Ministry of Health.

            He has many international collaborations and large research grants that support resource mobilization, training and mentoring of undergraduate and postgraduate students of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana. He has supervised more than 40 postgraduates and 140 medical students and, published over 180 peer reviewed articles. 

He is a country expert on the WHO Global Network on Long-term care, a member of the Lancet Frailty Commission, a member of the WHO Team for the Multi-country Study on AGEing and Adult Health (SAGE) and the principal investigator for the WHO World Health Survey Plus (WHS+) for Ghana. 

            His personal contribution to international partnerships and collaborative health sciences programme between the  Gulf Medical University (UAE) and the University of Ghana (UG) earned him an award received from His Highness and Ruler of Ajman (Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi) United Arab Emirates in November 2025. 

He has over a decade of leadership roles in the University, is the immediate past Dean of the University of Ghana Medical School and the current Provost, College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana.
