POSTGRADUATE ENDOWMENT FUND
In fulfilment of its vision and mission, the College of Health Sciences, in August 2000, established a Postgraduate Endowment Fund managed by a Board of Trustees with the following aims:
a) Promoting the training of doctors and other health professional of high quality to cater for the health needs of Ghana.
b) Undertaking research, especially into local diseases.
c) Providing scholarships for graduate training tenable at any of the constituent Schools.
d) Procuring essential equipment for research related to graduate training in Medicine and Allied Health Sciences.
The establishment of the Postgraduate Endowment Fund has had tremendous impact on enrolment into postgraduate programmes (Residency, MPhil, MPH and PhD) in the College. Before the Fund was instituted, attraction of young graduates into postgraduate programmes was low. Indeed from 1996 to 1998, recruitment into Fellow West Africa College of Surgeons/Fellow West Africa College of Physicians (FWACS/FWACP) training programmes averaged 7 per year.
Enrolment of MPH students for the School of Public Health averaged 24 per year, and enrolment in MPhil, PhD and MD programmes in the Health Sciences averaged 22 in 1999.
Since the inception of the Endowment Fund, almost all the schools and institutions under the College have doubled their intake, with more than half of the students benefiting from the Fund.
Beneficiaries have pursued specialist programmes in Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Child Health, Internal Medicine, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Urology, Orthopaedics, Dentistry etc. Others have also pursued postgraduate courses in fields such as Anatomy, Pathology, Microbiology, Haematology, Allied Health Sciences, Public Health, Reproductive Health etc.
About 90% of those who have benefited from the scholarships and have qualified are still in the country as specialist doctors, allied health professionals, public health practitioners and medical scientists working for the Ministry of Health, the College and other Health Institutions. The Fund has, therefore, had a positive impact on the training of health professionals in the country. It has also played a significant role in reversing the brain drain.
With generous support of some donor companies and individuals who demonstrate their deep commitment to the Fund’s efforts towards increasing the human resource capacity in the health sector through the provision of scholarships and research grants to postgraduate students, the Fund has provided scholarships and research grants to about 395 postgraduate students to date.
