CHS marks 2026 Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa with community Medical screening exercise

As part of activities marking the 2026 Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa (DSRA), the College of Health Sciences (CHS), University of Ghana, organized a community medical screening exercise on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, under the theme “Equitable Development: Research, Collaborate, Empower.”

The outreach programme was held at the Salvation Army Cluster of Schools in Mamprobi and brought together teachers, pupils, parents, and members of the surrounding community to access free health screening and health education services.

The exercise formed part of the College's commitment to promoting community health and well-being while advancing the principles of equitable development through research, collaboration, and service to society.

Speaking at the event, Professor Yaw Afrane, Chair of the CHS Research Board, explained that the screening exercise was designed to provide general health assessments rather than focus on any specific disease. He noted that a multidisciplinary team comprising ophthalmologists, dentists, medical physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and laboratory technicians had been assembled to screen participants for a range of health conditions.

According to Professor Afrane, individuals identified with conditions requiring further medical attention would be referred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for comprehensive evaluation and treatment.

A major highlight of the programme was an oral health education session led by Dr. Rosemary Appo and her team from the University of Ghana Dental School. The team engaged pupils from both the lower and upper primary levels in an interactive discussion on the importance of proper oral hygiene and dental care.

The children were educated on the benefits of maintaining healthy teeth, including improved confidence and overall well-being. They were advised to limit the consumption of sweets and avoid chewing hard toffees, which can damage teeth and lead to cavities. The dental team also emphasized the importance of brushing twice daily—once in the morning and again before bedtime.

In addition, pupils were encouraged to use soft-bristled toothbrushes, replace their toothbrushes every three months, and visit a dentist every six months for routine dental check-ups.

Following the educational session, the dental team conducted oral examinations for both pupils and teachers and distributed free dental care items to participants. Teachers and community members also benefited from eye examinations, blood pressure checks, and consultations with healthcare professionals. Where necessary, medications were provided to support the treatment of identified conditions.

The medical team further educated pupils on important public health issues, including HIV prevention and awareness. Participants were provided with age-appropriate information on the causes, transmission, and prevention of HIV and were encouraged to make informed decisions that promote healthy lifestyles and personal well-being. The team also encouraged students to remain focused on their education and future aspirations.

The medical screening exercise highlighted the College's dedication to translating research and professional expertise into meaningful community impact. Through initiatives such as these, the College of Health Sciences continues to promote equitable access to healthcare, strengthen community partnerships, and empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health.

As CHS continues its observance of the 2026 Day of Scientific Renaissance of Africa, the College remains committed to advancing scientific knowledge, fostering collaboration, and improving lives through service, education, and research-driven interventions.
