The College of Health Sciences has formally welcomed its newly admitted students for the 2026/2027 academic year at a matriculation ceremony held at the Cedi Conference Centre on 31st October, 2026 to mark the beginning of their academic journey.
The ceremony brought together college management, faculty members, heads of departments, members of Convocation, parents, guardians and the newly admitted students to officially induct the freshmen into the University community.
Welcoming the students on behalf of the University Registrar, Mr Worlanyo Newton Torvinyo, College Registrar of the College of Health Sciences, explained that matriculation was a formal requirement for all newly admitted students in accordance with the Article 31 of the University of Ghana Act, 2010 (Act 800). He asserted that students were required to take the matriculation oath and sign the matriculation register to become recognized members of the University.
Delivering the Vice-Chancellor's address on behalf of Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Alfred Edwin Yawson, congratulated the students on their admission and urged them to uphold the University's values of integrity, loyalty, respect and commitment. He encouraged the freshmen and women to take advantage of the academic, social and professional opportunities available to them, stressing that success at the University goes beyond academic performance to include character development, leadership and responsible citizenship.
Professor Yawson also highlighted the University's five strategic priorities under its 2024–2029 Strategic Plan: Transformative Student Experience, Impactful Research, Commitment to Faculty and Staff, Engagement and Partnership, and Sustainable Resource Mobilization and Stewardship. He further outlined initiatives aimed at improving students' experiences, including the One Student One Laptop initiative, improved lecture hall facilities, Wi-Fi-enabled learning environments and student support services. On student welfare, he encouraged freshmen to prioritize their physical and mental health, access services offered by the Careers and Counselling Directorate and Student Financial Aid Office, as well as participate in extracurricular activities while maintaining a healthy balance with their academic responsibilities.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the administration of the matriculation oath, during which students pledged to observe the University's regulations, obey its lawful authorities, study diligently, seek the truth and promote the good of the University. Miss Destiny Raymond, a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences student, subsequently delivered an address on behalf of the 2026/2027 cohort and ceremonially signed the matriculation register. In her address, she described the occasion as a significant milestone, acknowledging the sacrifices of parents, guardians, teachers and mentors. She called on her fellow students to pursue academic excellence, develop leadership skills, engage in community service and make meaningful contributions to society.
The Provost, in his closing remarks, emphasized punctuality as an essential value, particularly for students in the health sciences, whose future professions involve the preservation of human lives. He cautioned students against lateness and examination malpractice, urging them to take their studies seriously. Hon. John Dumelo, Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of Agriculture graced the occasion and encouraged freshmen to be focused and remain committed to their charge.
The ceremony concluded with the University anthem, a group photograph and final announcements from the Public Affairs Directorate. Students were also encouraged to activate their University of Ghana email accounts, regularly visit the University's website and follow its official social media platforms for important information and opportunities.
