In a remarkable demonstration of generosity and commitment to advancing medical education, Dr. Raziel Obeng-Okon, Founding Chief Executive Officer of Cidan Investment Banking, has donated GH¢50,000 to the College of Health Sciences (CHS), University of Ghana, to support brilliant but financially disadvantaged students of the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS).

The donation was officially presented during a courtesy visit to the College, where the Provost, Prof. Alfred Edwin Yawson, warmly welcomed Dr. Obeng-Okon and his delegation. The meeting commenced with introductions of faculty and staff of the College, after which the Provost expressed profound appreciation for the generous gesture.

In his remarks, Prof. Yawson explained that the College has an established and transparent support system dedicated to identifying and assisting academically outstanding students facing financial hardship. Through a structured application process, deserving students are selected to receive support towards tuition fees, accommodation and living expenses. The programme is managed by a committee chaired by Prof. John Ahenkorah, which carefully verifies the financial circumstances of applicants, including engagement with parents and guardians where necessary, to ensure that assistance reaches the most deserving beneficiaries.

The Provost noted that the donation was made possible through Dr. Obeng-Okon's interaction with Prof. Mavis Gyekye, whose introduction to the College and testimony of the integrity, accountability and prudent management of previous donations by the College inspired his confidence in supporting the initiative.

Presenting the cheque, Dr. Obeng-Okon indicated that the donation formed part of his birthday celebration and reflected his desire to make a meaningful contribution to society by investing in the education of future medical professionals. He explained that although he had initially intended to support students in another discipline, his discussions with Prof. Gyekye and his confidence in the College's robust and transparent scholarship support mechanism convinced him to channel the funds to the College of Health Sciences.

He further expressed his satisfaction that the donation would directly benefit brilliant but needy medical students and pledged his commitment to continue supporting the initiative in the years ahead.

Receiving the cheque on behalf of the College, Prof. Yawson expressed heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Obeng-Okon for his timely and impactful contribution. He emphasized that the GH¢50,000 donation would significantly ease the financial burden of deserving medical students, enabling them to remain focused on their studies and successfully complete their medical education without undue financial hardship.

As a token of appreciation, the College presented Dr. Obeng-Okon with a birthday gift in recognition of his generosity and commitment to supporting higher education.
